Climate adaptation can be achieved by some very simple measures, such as better water management or planting more drought-resistant crops. As well as some more sophisticated ones such as smart farming with the use of drones and using Big Data to inform prudent decisions in farming.[1] So far, climate adaptation has received far less attention and resources than mitigation.[2]

China’s robust climate adaptation strategy was heavily promoted during the conference and received a lot of attention.[3] The National Climate Change Adaptation Strategy for 2022–2035 launched in June this year goes from enhanced warning systems and improving AI forecasting tools to planting more resilient crops, geographic diversification of supply chains and upgrading power grids for climate resilience of the energy sector.[4]

This summer, China has seen power outages and subsequent supply chain disruptions in what has been the worst recorded drought on record.[5] Every yuan invested in climate resilience, World Resources Institute China concludes, would return two to twenty times as much in value over the next 30 years.[6]
